Really that's all depends on how scripts have been written.
We've been using both PHP3 and PHP4 with PostgreSQL and we've not
problems with their
interaction at all.
Production sites are based on FreeBSD 3.x and Linux 2.2.

It is the right to say that you can't recommend to use
PHP4/PostgreSQL/MetaBase
as I could catch you.
