Building shared library on Debian

I got bitten by the __ns_name_unpack@@GLIBC_2.1 issue (bug #4374) when
trying to build php4 as a shared apache module.  Building the CGI version
works fine (although I didn't test the executable).  This is on a
relatively bare Debian 2.2 box.  Has anybody encountered this problem
before, and what, if anything, was done to solve it.

Any help would be *EXTREMELY* appreciated.
