Sprites are favoured over normal images, but they're harder to maintain. As we're still in mid-development and things will most likely change then we should not use sprites until we're at the end of the dev cycle and looking to "optimize" things, and that's where sprites come in. We could incorporate a twitter feed from "pecl_php" user that's currently on twitter, and maybe the pear user too, that would give a more social feel, letting people know more about those twitter users (they can follow them) and from now on we can roll out news/updates via twitter with bit.ly links back to the PHP website. In order to get the top pecl/pear packages, if there isn't already a way, I can modify the pecl.php.net or pear.php.net source to start logging stats like Package views, Package downloads and so on, that way we can accurately choose the top ones. This will be good for publicizing the pecl/pear sites. Currently people end up going to silly sites like phpclasses.org in search of packages because the pear site isn't too inviting for them.
