If we go this way, I wouldn't go any denser than the 2x2 grid in the
mockup: we don't want to overload people with information on the front
page, IMO. I also share Daniel's concerns about aggregating external
content.

I realise there was a list in the first e-mail, but assuming there
were four slots, I'd be interested to know exactly what other people
think would be likely to be in there at the moment — I'm kind of
struggling to fill the third and fourth slots without implicitly
favouring an external site or event, such as a conference, which opens
that can of worms around endorsements. My feeling would be something
like this:

Top left: information on the floating point bug with a link to the test script.
Top right: support information; something titled like "Need Help?"
with a one sentence summary of the basic options (mailing list, IRC,
StackOverflow, whatever) and a link to /support.
Bottom left: get involved.
Bottom right: user groups.

To be honest, as I've written this, I've kind of come to the
conclusion that I actually prefer the existing news feed, and that we
might be better off shunting the non-news information into the
sidebar. :)

I'm not too bothered about the elephpants one way or the other: they
do add a bit of colour to the page, but I don't think that bar can be
any bigger than it is in the mockup. Some people are on screens with
limited vertical space.
