Update: I reproduced the same thing on a CentOS 5 server, with PHP 5.4
NTS loaded as mod_fcgid (compiled from the current GIT head).

https://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=66460 might be related, because the
reporter of that bug uses Typo3 and Typo3 has a Superfish extension as
well.
