Love the idea Cal.

I think User Groups always add, never divide. After creating AmsterdamPHP
in an already active area, we have found that numbers for PHPBenelux in
nearby areas are either unaffected or grown. So i'm all in for this as it
can start getting a new crowd active and then pipe them into starting UGs
or joining others.

Also, regarding the attendance discussion, its pretty interesting that for
AmsterdamPHP we are just reaching 1 year of meetups, we have just shy of
300 members but we have an average 50-60 per meeting, limited actually by
our venues.
We always have beer and food, and we do a single 1hour talk, focusing more
on the social then the "sit and listen" model.

It has worked very well, its a small commitment and we also keep them
always on the 3rd thursday of the month, that really helps. Interesting
enough our meeting are usually 50-50 regulars versus newcomers, or less
regular members.
