I’m re-sending my reply of this morning as it didn’t make the list for some reason:

I think that is an *excellent* idea! I was a php.net visitor waaay before I discovered user groups, so I think that could really get people to know about community much earlier in their careers. The manual pages are a good candidate for a "did you know there’s a meetup" notice... (next stop: stackoverflow *grin*)

Reading the rest of the thread, I can add that Meetup really worked (works) for us here in the Netherlands. But I also strongy agree it should not be made a “standard” because it’s a paid service, not to mention they keep annoying Rafael Dohms by changing their API without consulting him (so it’s not stable enough to be relied on).
I’d say we choose a standard for input, and then export meetups from whatever source a particular group decides to use to the standard.
