Hi Ben (and everyone else.)

Thank you for that question!

Personally I'm strongly opposed to the increasing usage of proprietary
tools for communication be it slack or facebook or whatsapp or (fill in
your personal favourite). There are lots of well defined, widely used
and bulletproof protocols that cover almost all requirements. Ommiting
these and instead moving to proprietary protocolls seems like coding
against an implementation instead of an interface.

And that was (and still is) my response to the idea of a usergroup-wide
slack-team. But on the other hand, I'd rather have one place to have to
look for those not on IRC instead of hundreds. At least MY primary
intention in creating that team was to catch all those not on IRC or
already using slack as their main communication channel into ONE place
to look for them instead of them splitting up into hundreds of different
places.

That was the intention behind my emphasis of that team NOT being a
replaement but an addition of the way we as a community can communicate
with one another.

And to make it possible and easy to integrate this team into your
currently used chat-application - be it a Jabber- or IRC-client - I also
opened up the gateways so that you can communicate with the slack-team
via your already used clients. It's not the real McCoy, I know.

This is not really an answer to your question but it should express that
I had (more or less) the same concerns when I started this.
