Beth, you bring up a great concern, and I immediately imagined a workaround
for that issue.

What if each member starts out at a level:

(imaginary group levels)

   - New Community Member
   - Frequent Community Member
   - Senior Community Member

Then, each group can have it's own set of ways to earn points: (and again,
this is something I just made up as an example)

   - New Community Member
      - Ask a question [1 pt]
      - Reply to a post [0.5 pt]
      - Write about something interesting you read in Web Development [1 pt]
      - Connect with a PHP mentor [3 pt]
      - Log in each day  [0.1 pt]
      - Frequent Community Member
      - Right a blog post [2 pt]
      - Assist with someones question [1 pt]
      - Log in each day  [0.1 pt]
      - Senior Community Member
      - Assist with someones question [1 pt]
      - Speak at a conf [1 pt]
      - Attend a conf [1 pt]
      - Set up to mentor a new community member [3 pt]
      - Log in each day  [0.1 pt]

*Thinking deeper: *

What if these points added up and gave you "upgraded" icons? Let's say, 100
points earn's you an upgraded icon, let's call it a "Star". 2 star at 200
points, 3 starts at 300 points.
The purpose of the stars (whatever icons) is to be able to "hold onto" the
reputation you've earned, if there is a case where you can "spend" your
points on donated prizes.

Alternatively, rather than spending points or earning stars, you can earn
"titles" and be displayed on a scoreboard system or the "homepage" of
wherever this system will take place.


*Question: *

How will you determine all the community members? Would we have to grit our
teeth trying to get everyone to register for the new web application? I
guess that's a good start to see who's actually "active". :-)
