The main difference between a forum and an Email-List is whether you
have to pull the information or get the information pushed. Personally I
want to get information pushed as I then can check whether they are
relevant for me or not. If I have to pull the information... - I won't
do it. Too much work if I'm not 100% interested!

And by the way, there is also a third system that was build exactly for
threaded discussions: Newsgroups. It might be considered old-school but
it's (in my eyes) exactly the thing bridging the gap between
Mailing-List and Forum. There's a news-implementation on news.php.net
that is worth considering a look! Nice threaded view even though it's a
mailing-list ;)

Just for the record: We created a private channel in the
phpug-slack-team for the organizers of our usergroup (phpugffm) and I've
seen some other groups do that as well.
