Setze mal

SMTP_SMARTHOST_x_AUTH_TYPE='plain'

so steht es hier schon immer bei mir für gmx.

Gegebenenfalls auch:

SMTP_SMARTHOST_x_FORCE_AUTH='yes'
SMTP_SMARTHOST_x_FORCE_TLS='yes'
