However, after revisiting the Mesa code, it appears that a fence is always emitted for each userq submission, and I could not find any code for identifying long-running submissions. How should long-running submissions be identified in userspace? Userspace should not use protected fences in that case. In theory compositors that use explicit sync do not need to use the protected fence.
