Thanks for the responses - I will [eventually] get round to looking at newer 
kernels.  I tried compiling a new kernel but got kernel panics and forget 
how to solve this [can't find block device etc]. But I have also installed 
an older SMP kernel [I am using the Debian sarge DVD] 2.4.27, which seems to 
work fine with my modem, so I'm happy for now!
