Problem:
Internal speakers are completely silent. The analog audio device is
detected normally and headphones work.
Relevant findings:
- Speaker mixer is enabled at 100%.
- Speaker pin is node 0x17:
EAPD enabled
Pin-ctls: OUT
fixed internal speaker
connection selects DAC 0x11
- DAC 0x11 is the Speaker Playback DAC and is unmuted.
- During direct ALSA hw:0,0 playback, DAC 0x11 showed an active stream and
remained powered/unmuted, but the physical speakers were still silent.
- Direct ALSA playback therefore fails independently of PipeWire.
Tests already performed without success:
- normal snd_hda_intel path
- forced Intel Panther Lake SOF path (sof-audio-pci-intel-ptl)
- model=thinkpad
- model=sirius-top-speaker
- EAPD/pin/connection hda-verb tests
- GPIO unmute attempts
- suspend/resume
- direct ALSA playback
- ThinkPad software_mute=0
SOF successfully booted with firmware 2.14.1.1 and sof-hda-generic
topology, but internal speakers remained silent.
There is also a separate firmware/thinkpad_acpi incompatibility:
the BIOS ECRD method expects an ACPI reference, while thinkpad_acpi calls
it with an integer EC address, producing AE_TYPE errors. I tested a
temporary thinkpad_acpi patch that bypasses ECRD and uses direct EC access.
That fixed the EC errors and reported:
mute: off
but the speakers were still silent.
Conclusion:
The HDA/ALSA signal path appears correctly configured through DAC 0x11 ->
speaker pin 0x17, but no sound reaches the physical speakers. This looks
like missing board-specific SN6140 speaker/amplifier initialization for
this E16 Gen 4 rather than a userspace configuration problem.

Direct-playback observation
---------------------------
During direct ALSA hw:0,0 playback, DAC 0x11 showed an active stream while
remaining powered and unmuted, with speaker pin 0x17 still selecting 0x11
and EAPD enabled. The physical speakers nevertheless remained silent.
This direct-playback observation was recorded interactively during testing
and is not captured in the final idle-state alsa-info dump.

ThinkPad ACPI / EC finding
--------------------------
The BIOS ECRD ACPI method expects a reference and dereferences Arg0, while
thinkpad_acpi calls ECRD with an integer EC address. This causes AE_TYPE
errors and makes the legacy EC volume interface unreadable.
A temporary test patch made thinkpad_acpi bypass ECRD and use direct EC
access. With that patch:
/proc/acpi/ibm/volume:
level: unsupported
mute: off
The ECRD errors disappeared, but the internal speakers remained silent.
Therefore the ThinkPad hardware-mute/EC issue does not explain the speaker
failure.
Conclusion
----------
Userspace configuration and the ordinary HDA signal path appear correct.
The failure is most consistent with missing board-specific speaker/amplifier
initialization for this ThinkPad E16 Gen 4 / SN6140 combination.
The likely area for investigation is the Linux HDA Conexant codec path,
including any board-specific initialization required after DAC 0x11 and
speaker pin 0x17 have been enabled.
