Because a lot of them are smart enough to use CPP macros like __sparc_v9__ or __arch64__ to determine things, rather than assuming sparc64 = 64-bit || v9 instructions. The compiler is much better at determining this (CC="gcc -mcpu=ultrasparc" for example) than `uname'.
