As a competent mailing list user, I don't like them myself. I think the theory behind them is that less competent users receive regular reminders about how to unsubscribe, so they're more likely to unsubscribe properly than bang the spam button on their webmail, so you're less likely to get blacklisted. Personally, it's something I'd look into only if blacklisting became a problem. In these enlightened days of List-* headers, and increasing MUA support of them, this Mailman feature is probably (even) less valuable than before.
