I was trying to boot through NFS. So the=C2=A0problem was that sysinit v3.0=
1 is not allowing root login through NFS.=C2=A0 After changing the nfs serv=
er side parameters(added no_root_squash,insecure /etc/exports ) i am able t=
o boot with NFS.

This is the root cause. I am able the change the password using above menti=
oned procedure.
