Makefile:49: *** missing separator. Stop.

Good morning.
 
I am new to CPAN and was trying to install DBD::mysql and got the
following errors:
 
    Unsuccessful stat on filename containing newline at
/usr/lib/perl5/5.8.0/ExtUtils/Liblist/Kid.pm line 100.    
    Unsuccessful stat on filename containing newline at
/usr/lib/perl5/5.8.0/ExtUtils/Liblist/Kid.pm line 100.
    Using DBI 1.45 (for perl 5.008 on x86_64-linux-thread-multi)
installed in /usr/lib64/perl5/site_perl/5.8.0/auto/DBI/
    Writing Makefile for DBD::mysql
    Makefile:49: *** missing separator.  Stop.
       /usr/bin/make  -- NOT OK
    Running make test
      Can't test without successful make
    Running make install
      make had returned bad status, install seems impossible

There were about 20 of the Unsuccessful stat errors;
 
Any tips/clues on how to fix this?  I've gotten this same error on
several other bundles I've tried to load.
I'm running RedHat Enterprise 2.4.21-20.EL
                 Perl "This is perl, v5.8.0 built for
x86_64-linux-thread-multi"
                DBD::mysql is
"/root/.cpan/sources/authors/id/R/RU/RUDY/DBD-mysql-2.9004.tar.gz"
and I loaded CPAN yesterday from ftp://cpan.cs.utah.edu/.
