Thanks for the suggestions and the cpan lesson, I REALLY appreciate it.


There were still problems so I finally did a reinstall of perl using
the Ubuntu synaptic package manager. I could not find Tk Perl as such
in Synaptic but I found an ap that needed Tk so I used Synaptic to
install it and this resulted in Synaptic installing Tk also. Since
installing Tk had been my primary task that worked, I will have to see
if this also has made module MCPAN work from the command line. It is
weird because module MCPAN works fine on my Athlon under Ubuntu
