Yes, very hard, a nightmare.

I finally got some success:
- perl-5.12.3 with thread is compiled: OK
- DBI-1.616 compiled: OK
- DBI::mysql-4.018 compiled but fail one test.

I will look to the cpan testers site, but I am not able to promise to 
contribute right now.  The guy who code in perl left and leave me with the 
problem.  I am in the rush to migrate this application before 1st march 
(in fact, the whole server).

I am able to send the build log (make + make test) to someone who can feed 
the cpan testers site for me and I will promise to use our dev server to 
conduct some tests in the future, if you need.  We run aix 6.1

Anecdotally  we have used DBI versions 1.5.1 on AIX 5.3 with perl 5.8.8
and DBI 1.6.1.5 on AIX 6.1 with perl 5.12.2. All were (read: had to be)
compiled with gcc so I know its possible. We're also using DBD::Oracle and
DBD::Mysql as well with both of those combinations successfully. Its
usually a pain to get things to compile cleanly on AIX.

I took a look at CPAN testers and I'll see if its possible for me and my
servers to join and send in some AIX reports. No promises though.

The last test report for the DBI on AIX was from version 1.609
over a year ago:
