I wasn't subscribed to the list, but the referees did drop me a note 
telling me
I was behind the leaders.  No complaints there, and for a while, I did 
enjoy
looking at the leaderboard and fantasizing that I was winning.  I'll 
admit, by
now it's gotten a little embarrassing; I would like to see the 
leaderboard
carried out another decimal place.

So, no complaints about not finishing first; I think I did that to 
myself by
playing the hole under 5.6.0.  Solutions ending in $_=@p[$_] did not 
work for
me, because $_ (the whole input line) was subscripting as zero.  I was
mystified, especially when $` worked fine; search the postmortem for the
word "impossible".  Now I've upgraded, and the thing works, a little too 
late.
So, I'm guessing this was some odd bug in 5.6.0.

Let me be clear; I'm thrilled to have missed first place by .004.  This 
is the
first time I've been close enough to see the leaders.

Am I a cautionary tale yet?  Upgrade!
