Internal ID: PerlSF Location: United States, CA, San Francisco Pay rate: market Travel: 0% Terms of employment: Independent contractor (hourly) Length of employment: 3-6 months Hours: Full time Onsite: yes Description: * Find and remove unused code. * Move code into proper package namespaces. * Enable strictures and warnings in hundreds of files. * Convert Perl-4 code to Perl-5 constructs and syntax. * Write or generate test cases for legacy libraries. * Apply Conway's best-practices and enforce standards. * Reorganize code into CPAN-style distributions using Module::Build. * Refactor & rewrite procedural code into object-oriented code. * Extract inline SQL into an external dictionary. * Create a tool for reporting every caller of every subroutine through static analysis. * Reorganize code in an SVN repository. * Automate our build process. Required skills: Required skills: - Writing object-oriented and procedural Perl code. - Working in a Unix command-line environment. - Writing unit tests using the Test::* modules. - Judging risks associated with code changes. - vi or emacs. - Organize tasks and track their dependencies. - Communicate progress and describe roadblocks promptly. - Take direction and work with limited supervision (about 1 hour per day.) Desired skills: Desired skills: - Refactoring tools and techniques. - Source-code management tools (SVN, CVS). - In-depth knowledge of what is available on CPAN. - Creating CPAN modules.
