Posted: December 13, 2006 Job title: Scientific Informatics Developer Company name: Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Location: United States, New York, Cold Spring Harbor Travel: 0-25% Terms of employment: Salaried employee Hours: Full time Onsite: yes Description: Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) is a world-renowned research and educational institution with programs in cancer, neuroscience, plant biology and bioinformatics. A team of CSHL scientists makes up the Data Coordination Center (DCC) for the International HapMap Project, which has been a multi-institutional effort to create a map of genetic variation in human populations. Such map has been a public resource for researchers to use to find genes affecting health, disease, and responses to drugs and environmental factors. The HapMap DCC is now looking for a lead software architect with strong software developer skills and good understanding of human genetics. The successful applicant will take a forefront role in maintaining and enhancing the HapMaps website content and software infrastructure. The portfolio of projects is aimed to support scientists in the design, execution and analysis phases of genetic association studies. This position requires writing software documentation, and entails participation in the publication of scientific papers. Personal enrichment and involvement with the scientific community is fostered through technology exchanges, code reviews, and participation in lectures, workshops, and conferences, both locally and remotely. Required skills: Master's degree in Computer Science plus 3 years experience or Bachelor's degree in Computer Science plus 5 years of experience as a software engineer (relevant experience is described below). One major programming language (Perl, Java, or C/C++), MySQL/Postgres, and Unix-based systems. Overall experience with Apache, XML, and CGI. Database experience including object-relational modeling, database administration and maintenance, and performance tuning; experience in maintaining high volume databases is highly desirable. Web development experience includes writing static and dynamic web pages, templates, and server-side applications. Experience with bioinformatics resources and tools. Desired skills: Good understanding of human genetics concepts is highly desirable. Familiarity with genetic analysis methods is a plus. Working knowledge of statistics software, such as R.
