Linux jpl install help

I'm trying to install the jpl that comes with 5.6 on a Linux Debian(potato) machine.  With any of JDK 1.1.3,1.2, or 1.3(identical problem in all cases).

The install-jpl script errors out with gcc complaining about undefined 'thr' in PerlInterpreter.c.(see below)

Any suggestions?
