I did a recursive directory search in my whole Perl lib tree and did
not see a definition of this anywhere

What sort of Perl are you using? I typed perldoc -f getpwuid from the
shell on my Solaris system and getpwuid was documented..
maybe type perl -V and tell us what version you are using.
