I did that for almost every module.
At least you have an external backup :)
As for easy contributions, I just had one so far.

Git on windows was painful to set up for me.

And no, I don't like to run msysGit, it just adds another complication.
After battling for a while, I can now run git.exe in my regular
command line window, but I had to copy stuff manually etc...
but it's not really straightforward.

I see the value in the one repository "to bind them all".
That said, I have no strong opinions.

It shouldn't be difficult to have several git repositories
bound together... Is there something like svn:external ?
