I was actually sort of aware of this (only sort of, since I've never
written a Win32 program).  From the info I've picked up it isn't quite
that smooth in Win32, either, there are some exceptions and exceptions
to exceptions...?  But yes, the WFMO is a more generic interface than
select/poll.
