Regarding MacPerl 5.6.1, you might try the following: Delete the "MacPerl 5 Preferences " file (in case it gets mangeled, the last character is a option-d), launch the MacPerl app again and run your test script. I wouldn't be surprised, if that error has gone, magically :). Early alpha versions indeed have had a bug and have stored the buggy path in the pref file. Since new pref files are only created when the app can't find an existing one, bingo, you still get that error.
