Some news: I found the following in the "Change History" document that comes with the WASTE distribution:

"- Optimized some low-level routines to reduce the number of calls to FetchFontInfo (or GetFontInfo, in systems prior to 8.5) to the absolute minimum."

So it's the WASTE lib that needs FetchFontInfo() (and a DumpPEF on the shared WASTELib proved it), although it shouldn't happen with Mac OS < 8.5, according to the above statement. I'm still clueless how to get rid of the problem.
