I was following your advice in

because of a problem with cpan-max.  I suppose the message is well out of 
date.

Ah.  OK.  Didn't know what kind of argument Lookup wanted; I'd tried 
"Sound" with no success.

Must I use Carbon if my Mac has it?  All I really want to do is get a
one-channel sound sample with known sampling rate into a one-dimensional
array and then play it through the headphones.
