Detlef,

There is no likelihood of this being added to Perl 5. (However, see below.)

Work on Perl 6, the new version of Perl, is underway now. A
request-for-comments (that is, soliciting opinions for new
features/commands/etc.) for Perl 6 went out approximately 5 years ago.
See: http://dev.perl.org/perl6/rfc/meta/

There will be a new intrinsic function in Perl 6 that does what you
propose -- it will be called "say".

As part of the Perl 6 design process, portions of the Perl 6 language
specification are being back-implemented for Perl 5. There is a Perl
Modules that implements "say" for Perl 5:
http://search.cpan.org/dist/Perl6-Say/Say.pm

Install this, use it, and you will get the functionality that you desire.

Mind you, none of this has much to do with the YAPC::NA conference
announcement or YAPC::NA conference. You can learn more about the
conference and what it is all about at: http://yapc.org/America/

Cheers,
Richard
