"or" has lower precedence:

$ perl -MO=Deparse,-p -e '$Is_BSD     = $^O =~ /^(?:free|net|open)bsd$/ or
 $^O eq "bsdos" '
(($Is_BSD = ($^O =~ /^(?:free|net|open)bsd$/)) or ($^O eq 'bsdos'));
-e syntax OK
