common music notation interactive software

All you musical minions,

In my doings as a pimptastic applied linguist working on language 
preservation, I've come across a book of about 130 songs in the language of 
the group I'm working with these days, the Alaskan Haidas.  The book has 
songs in common sheet-music notation (altho with lots of exotica thrown in 
by the transcriber, especially: lots of weird time signatures like 5/2, 
7/4, etc, and with frequent changes between them).  Importantly, many of 
the songs have been forgotten except in their form in this book.

Can anyone recommend some simple (and hopefully free-ish) software for 
MSWin that'd be a sort of modern equivalent of Music Construction Set 
(anyone else remember that?) -- i.e., something where I could key in the 
notated music interactively, see it right then on the staff on the screen 
(mostly so I can see that I'm not miskeying it, comparing it with the 
printed page), and then produce instrumental audio from it?  The audio 
wouldn't see "real use" (no recording or performance), it's just for me to 
use in jogging people's memories.
