Use the alsa midi ultilities
amidi
aplaymidi
arecordmidi
aconnect

run them with the -h option to get a list
of options.

amidi -h

amidi -l  will list all your ports, then use those
in the -p option of the other utilities.

P.S. Keep notes on what you find successful, because
you will probably forget after awhile. :-)
