earlier i replied about MIDI::Realtime but i don't think it got to the
list - possibly sent from the wrong address.

i just noticed this, an alternative, probably better module that my
MIDI::Realtime, which is also OSS (and therefore unix / ALSA) specific:

no, although you can get the 'development' version here, which works
slightly better:

now we (slub.org) only use our hand-made software sampler:

so i don't often play with MIDI any more
