Things get even worse with SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 SP 3 (which is the 
latest available version!): they still ship Perl 5.10.0:

Since we also had some trouble with the equally out-dated OpenSSL package we 
simply switched to another distribution instead of trying Perlbrew or plenv.
