Call for wider testing

So I've checked in the changes that Schwern described and my noodling  
on that, and so far have test passes for OSX 10.5.1, a FreeBSD, an x86  
linux, and a x86_64 linux.  I am somewhat fearful that I may have  
broken things on a less mainstream platform, so if you have access to  
one could you please could check out a new copy and let me know.
