It looks like you can add 'use bytes' to your program and things will work as well. use bytes; use MARC::Batch; my $batch = new MARC::Batch('USMARC', $ARGV[0]); $batch->strict_off (); $batch->warnings_off (); my $record = $batch->next; print $record->as_usmarc; Does that "screw things up" for you in a similar way that binmode on the filehandle does? What does "screw things up" actually mean? //Ed
