I think what Tom means is that (for example)

        print "${\(localtime())}\n";

does not produce "Tue Aug 29 19:15:55 2000".

Anyway, this is off-topic for this mailing list, so let's put an end
to this part of the discussion unless it relates somehow to regexes.
