Ah, hm. Indeed ;-) Should we rename things so that people can use
CPAN.pm without need of the internal package structure? On the other
hand, there are packages like libwww etc. as well ...

Intermediately the original poster wrote me once more. According to
your results, everything worked fine after a reboot. There was a power
(supply?) problem which obviously caused the trouble.
