Would it be simpler to just use a plugin wrapper?

oldplugin could become:

sub init {
    my ($self, $qp, @args) = @_;
    $self->log(LOGINFO,"oldplugin is deprecated and has been folded into
newplugin.  The alias may be removed eventually."
    $self->isa_plugin("newplugin");
 }

The wording isn't quite right... but you get the idea.
