I'd also love to get my hands on a later version of Perl for
RISC OS, but I recall Alex Waugh saying that his port was not
complete and was very much alpha test only.

What is %b016 supposed to do? Perhaps it would be better to write a
routine for Perl 5.005 to do it. That way you wouldn't be dependent
on 5.8 and could run your program on RISC OS using a more stable
version of Perl.
