It seems to me that part of the module author's responsibility is to make him/herself accesible just for situations like this. I think you've gone beyond the call of duty in trying to contact the author, and should adopt the module. I know if I were to die, for example, no coders would know, and my wife would have no idea to let anyone know. I would hope that someone would pick up and continue any code I have produced.
