"Invisible" uses of Perl.

Sometimes students don't know that Perl is used for anything besides the
web(!). But most places where it's used, it's not visible. Of the many
"invisible" uses of Perl, though, one of my favorites is the Human Genome
Project, which may be the largest scientific endeavor in all of human
history. Thanks in part to the help of Perl, it's now proceeding at a rate
of about 10% per month. (Alas, this doesn't mean that the whole genome
will be mapped in a year - the last 5% or so will be the toughest, and may
take another decade to complete.)
