As someone who's done this quite a few times, there's an easy fix.  If you
catch yourself before you've written a lot.

Wait until the permanent marker is fairly dry. Take a regular dark-colored
whiteboard marker and write (actually scribble) over the permanent marker.
Rub it in really well.  Erase quickly.  The whiteboard marker (somehow)
acts as a solvent and will lift the permanent marker off.

This also works when regular whiteboard marker has been left on the board
so long that it's "burned into" the whiteboard.  (Those of you who use
whiteboards a lot know what I mean.)
