patch@blead vms fileify_dirspec refactor / Unix mode fixes

This patch refactors the fileify_dirspec routine to not need a thread 
context, and also fixes some issue with Unix compatibility mode.

It is intended to be applied after the vms glob patch previously submitted.

Still more to come after this.
