Carl tells me off-list he's talking about the corruption of directory *names* in File::Copy, which was due to a bug in File::Spec::catpath(). That bug has been fixed in 5.12.2; as the release notes say, "catpath() returns an empty directory rather than the current directory if the input directory name is empty."
