We have a federal tax - goods and services tax (GST) and a provincial 
sales tax (PST) which have been 'harmonized' many years ago at 13% in my 
province. Groceries are mostly tax-exempt except for "convenience" 
foods.
For example, if I buy bread, lettuce, cheese etc to make a sandwich 
there is no tax but if I buy a prepared sandwich from the deli counter 
then it is taxed at 13%. If I buy a gigantic tub of yogurt, no tax but 
if I buy a 6-pack of individual cups then it's taxed. Snack foods like 
chips etc are also taxed.
