As one interesting comment on a TV program had it --it's not
a matter of whether aliens exist but how many are living in our
solar system.

As life on earth shows us it started early, various disasters tried
to kill it 5 times and failed and it immediately bounced back even
bigger.

If we infer that the same is true of the universe but just on a larger
scale -- life kicked off early maybe even when the universe was a much
smaller than now, 14b y later. They had plenty of time to get everywhere.

The mental model from movies and TV has it the typical alien gets on his
flying saucer, somehow finds earth after flying 1000 light years,
he does his stuff, packs up his probes and whotnot and flies all the way
back to Home Planet.

And this misleads a lot of people to thinking they are over there a
long way off and only come anywhere nr our solar system for short stays.

A more  "realistic" model suggests they have been everywhere from 
almost day 1.

Earth is a relatively young planet on a relatively young stars.
Stars like our sun are actually on the way out and had their Big Day
around 4 billion years ago.
So compared to your "typical" intelligent species (counting only
the ones that didnt eat themselves at some point) we are babies
and know nothing about anything.
