I love the look and feel of a fully buttoned collar, but I also do it for another reason-respect.

When I was growing up, you were normally expected to have your collar buttoned when you go to school or church, visiting grandma, work and formal occasions. It was an unwritten moral imperative.

So I keep my collar buttoned at all times, and it does make a huge difference. I always found open collars to be a bit sloppy, and sometimes even a turn off. Therefore, the top button always stays fastened no matter where I'm at.

When I was younger, I stayed at my grandmother's for about a week or so and we were going somewhere so my grandmother told me to dress nice. The only nice shirt I had was a green Ralph Lauren polo. I put it on and my grandmother immediately walked in and buttoned up my collar and tucked in my shirt into my pants. I was told that I should dress like this every time I have a shirt that buttons up. Before we left, my grandmother thought that my collar was too loose so we went to a nearby clothing store and she bought me a blue Oxford button up with a tight collar, and top button done up of course. Since then, I've always worn a shirt with my collar fastened whenever I visit her.

I agree. I've always, as a sign of respect, buttoned up my shirt when going to church.
